Happy New Year!

Happy New Year to everyone and here’s wishing you and your families health, happiness and success in the year ahead.

Looking back 2017 has been an amazing year. I hope you thoroughly enjoyed your year with Staunton Harold Sailing Club - whether that be learning to sail for the first time, sailing in a different boat, racing, travelling to new events, volunteering, developing new skills and so much more. Thank you to all of you.

Well done to everyone who raced in the Frostbite Series and the Boxing Day Bash and thank you to our social team for putting on a fun and festive Christmas party.

Looking ahead, our membership renewal forms should have reached you all via email. We have another action packed sailing calendar planned for 2018,  with lots of opportunities to sail, race, train, learn new skills, volunteer and have fun both on and off the water. So, please don’t delay with your renewals.

Some key dates coming up include:-

  • The Staunton Blaster which takes place over the weekend of 10/11 February and the Notts County Cooler on 24/25 February - more details on these below.

  • “St.Patrick’s Day” themed prize giving  and formal dinner on 17th March.

  • First adult training starting on 21st April, and juniors on 18th April, plus,

  • Push the Boat Out when we open the club up to the public on 6th May.

Last but not least, please join us on Sunday 28th January for our first working party of the year when we will be carrying out key maintenance jobs, packing away Christmas decorations and ‘spring cleaning’ the club. There will be a something for everyone to help out with and a warming, tasty lunch will be put on for all our volunteers.

Thank you all!

Elaine Penhaul

Membership Renewal Forms

Your 2018 membership renewal forms will have arrived in your inbox. If they haven’t please contact Di Pepperdine at membership@shsc.org.uk. With new Data Protection laws coming in, towards the end of May this year it is important that you carefully read and tick the boxes on the forms to ensure that you receive sailing and socials information. Members who complete and return their forms before 28th February will enjoy a prompt sign-up discount.

In February we will be launching a new interactive Newsletter - please ensure you tick your acceptance to receive club information on the renewal form so that we can keep you up to date on what is happening at the club.

Also to reassure you that the Data Protection laws should not have a big impact on the way we communicate with you - rather, as a club, we are building the requirements of the new laws, into everything we do, to ensure that once the laws are enforced at the end of May, the club already complies.

Working Parties

The first working party for 2018 is just a couple of weekends away. Please come along and help us to complete both big and small maintenance jobs - there’s plenty for everyone whether you have skills or not, a day or just an hour to offer. Working party dates are:

  • Sunday 28th January

  • Sunday 18th Feb

  • Sunday 25th Feb

To whet your appetite, here’s just some of the jobs available:-

  • Form BBQ storage shelter

  • Build floor to BBQ storage shelter

  • Fit shelves for hire storage in Elwell

  • Replace broken ironmongery to Training Room

  • Fit replacement recoil to mower

  • Grease big mower and service as required

and of course …

Staunton Blaster/ Notts County Cooler

The fantastic Staunton Blaster/ Notts County Cooler mini-series is back - hurray! Our very own Grahame Newton won this mini-series last year with Corey Newton second overall and Sam Jones third - so a clean sweep for Staunton.

This year the Staunton Blaster is on the weekend of 10/11 February and The Notts County Cooler is on the 24/25th February. So two full weekends of racing. Non-members are welcome to both weekends for a small fee, so feel free to invite your friends along. For full details please go to: /club-info-gallery/news/first-mini-open-series-for-2018.aspx

17th March, Fitting Out Supper and Prize Giving with a St.Patrick’s Day theme

Please save the date! This year, our traditional prize-giving, will feature a St.Patrick’s Day themed sit down "Fitting out Supper” where we will be inviting you to dress to impress in your St.Patrick’s Day finery and enjoy a formal sit down feast. The evening will feature a compere who will take you through the highs and entertaining moments of 2017 as we recognise the achievements of all of you - our members. Tickets and more details for this, not to be missed, event will be released shortly.

Annual General Meeting 2017

Thank you to the 50+ members who joined us for what was a very productive evening which included a re-cap on 2017, racing successes, training successes, junior squad weekends, Push the Boat Out, new activities (powerboat training for Juniors), and of course the successful set-up of and fund raising for Staunton Harold Sailability Trust. For a full details of all these achievements please go to:  /club-info-gallery/members-achievements.aspx

We also looked at upcoming events and goals for 2018, including encouraging more members out on the water.  More details are available to anyone who was unable to join us via lesleyfoz@gmail.com.

Sign up for your 2018 Duties

Over 66% of the membership has already signed up for their 2018 duties - thank you. We hope you have all found the electronic sign-up relatively easy. For anyone who has not had a chance to consult their 2018 diaries so far, or is not sure how to sign up please don’t delay.  If you’ve forgotten how, or lost your password please watch Neill’s step by step guide and signing up will be a doddle. Log on to: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dZQ8ba3N8dg

We have a host of great sailing and social activities planned for 2018 so please sign up and  support another great year.

A few points to remember

All sailing members over 16 are expected to do a minimum of 3 Duties each year. Please volunteer for more if you can, it's fun and worthwhile. Due to the shortages we experienced this year, we ask members who sail regularly to do 4 duties.

All members should do at least one Sunday duty.

Please sign up for duties that suit your experience.

Please check your own holiday or social dates before picking a duty, by spring/summer time, duty swaps are not that easy to arrange.

The only Duties that count are those on DutyMan. Volunteering to help out on duty calendar events is much appreciated, but does not count against your allocation.

Once a duty goes on DutyMan, it becomes the member’s responsibility to either fulfil the duty or swap with another member.

Thank you to everyone who has already signed up!

CONGRATULATIONS!

Christmas Party

Thank you to our superb social team headed up by Fiona for another great Christmas Party. Fun, games and partying were the order of the night.

Notices

Polite notice to all those using the Power Boats

This year we have two new power boats so please, please do not ‘race the engines’ on these boats. If you need any guidance on this please contact our bosun team bosun@shsc.org.uk

Please could crews ensure that all designated kit is kept on the Power Boat it belongs to. If kit is removed or missing please ensure that it is replaced and if it can not be, promptly reported. We are finding kit missing, replacing it and then finding it at the bottom of a kit bag on another boat.

And lastly, please ensure that you drain all Power Boats before returning them to the Boat House, and not once inside the Boat House.

Thank you

Security - please close and lock gates and keep your boats tied down

In this season of high winds you might like to ensure that your boats are kept tied down, stakes can be bought from Nigel Pepperdine or via Amazon.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Spiral-Corkscrew-Holding-Rustproof-Camping/dp/B06XCG4L95/ref=sr_1_12?ie=UTF8&qid=1494320705&sr=8-12&keywords=dog+screw+in+stake

We also ask all members to be aware of people who shouldn’t be in the boat park - please report them. Please also ensure that all gates are kept locked (except when there are Open Meetings/ Open Days in progress).

Crew/ Helm wanted

Don’t forget to use the whiteboard if you are looking for crew/ helms, 2018 holds lots of opportunities to sail, so please don’t let a lack of crew hold you back - we will be announcing some new ways for you to get linked in with potential helms and crews so please watch out for more news on this.
