Remember, remember the ‘4th’ of November!

We’re all counting down to 4th November and one of the biggest events in the Staunton Harold Sailing Club calendar - Bonfire and Fireworks Night! This year’s event is going to be even more spectacular than last year’s. Family and friends are very welcome, the more the merrier - we have a hog on order so can feed quite a crowd. Read on below to find out more about the event and how to book your tickets (shscsocial@gmail.com).

Looking ahead on the sailing side, we have some great events coming up - the Comet and Solo Open on Saturday 21st and then the Commodore and Buckley on Sunday 22nd. Last year over 30 boats took part in the Commodore and Buckley - Matt Lathoud (Laser) scooped top place in the Buckley fleet, whilst Pete Gray and Rachael Rhodes (Scorpion) did the same in the Commodore fleet. Our first junior was Oliver Hamilton (Topper).  So stand by your boats for a great event. Coming up at the end of October we have the ever popular Frostbite series - please note that this is an Open Series so feel free to invite your sailing friends along to take part, see below for full details.

On the training side we have a Power Boat - PB2 course coming up on 28th October/ 4th November. There are very limited places left on this course so please book a.s.a.p. to avoid disappointment (Rob Watson - rob15004@icloud.com). We also have a First Aid course on Saturday 4th November,  please book your place via lesleyfoz@gmail.com. And our next Junior PowerBoat training session for Juniors will be in November - please keep an eye on your gmails.

A key date for your diary is the upcoming Annual General Meeting which will take place on 26th November after the sailing - please save the date.

Looking back over the last few weeks, we’ve had some superb events. On the social side Lol and Grahame’s Curry and Quiz Night saw thirteen teams raise £200 for our Staunton Harold Sailability Trust and over £150 on the raffle for Macmillan Cancer. A great night out was had by one and all, a very big thank you to our hosts and their teams of volunteers.

On the sailing front Bart’s Bash was another great success, Staunton was

one of the top 30 clubs in the UK competing. The results are now available on the Barts Bash leader board if you go to www.bartsbash.com.

Well done to all our travelling sailors who have represented the club up and down the country. Well done also to all those who have taken part in training events, junior squad camps and a very big thank you to those who have volunteered at these events and at the Staunton Harold Sailability events - please let Mark Harden know if you are available to volunteer for this Sunday’s Sailability Event - secretary@shst.org.uk

Last but not least, as most of you know Rob and I have given up drinking completely for October! My aim is to raise money to help more people with disabilities who would like to join Staunton Harold Sailing Club to do so. Having a disability is expensive, and many families who would love to join us because they see the benefits it offers for the whole family simply can't do so because they can't afford it. Now that we have lots of great equipment my aim is to support those through Staunton Harold Sailability Trust who would like to join but need a little help to do so. I would love to have company so if you want to feel the benefits of a non-drinking month and to raise money for a great cause at the same time then join me! if not then please consider donating via:https://mydonate.bt.com/fundraisers/elainepenhaul1#.Wc-0XyStFmU.facebook.

Thank you all!

Elaine Penhaul

Hire Boats - gentle reminder

We are fortunate to have a strong training fleet of boats at SHSC and it’s great to be able to hire them out when they are not being used by the training team. And we know there is strong demand for them.

There is a hire charge associated with use of the training boats and it is important that we collect these to help us maintain the boats in good condition. The training team also need to have confidence that the equipment is where it should be when they run courses so we need to ensure that equipment is put back at the end of the day.

Hire fees are laid out clearly in the ‘hire store’ along with the procedure for hire but if in doubt do grab Nigel Pepperdine, one of the training team / committee for clarification.

Please note that the L2000s are not available for general hire this year but the committee will review this policy at the end of the year. There is a poster in the training notice board in the clubhouse giving more background.

Polite notice to all those using the Power Boats

Please could duty crews avoid dragging the front wheels into alignment rather than taking time to ‘jockey’ them as their name suggests. This has led to the destruction of one of the ‘outer carcass’ on a wheel.

Please could crews ensure that all designated kit is kept on the Power Boat it belongs to. If kit is removed or missing please ensure that it is replaced and if it can not be, promptly reported. We are finding kit missing, replacing it and then finding it at the bottom of a kit bag on another boat.

Please could anyone using the Power Washer ensure that is put back in its designated storage space and not left blocking access to the cupboard.

And lastly, please ensure that you drain all Power Boats before returning them to the Boat House, and not once inside the Boat House.

Thank you

Can you help?

The instruction booklet for the new radio has gone walk about, if you see it, please can you return it to the Boat House, cupboard where the radios are kept. Thank you.

Security - please close and lock gates and keep your boats tied down

We ask all members to be aware of people who shouldn’t be in the boat park - please report them. Please also ensure that all gates are kept locked (except when there are Open Meetings/ Open Days in progress). You might also like to keep your boat tied down, stakes can be bought from Nigel Pepperdine, or for a ‘dog’ stake that you can then padlock your tie-downs at £9.99 go to: Amazon

Crew/ Helm wanted or available- Don’t forget to use the white board if you are looking for crew/ helms.

Thank you to those who have already signed up for all or some of their duties.

If you have not already picked your three duties the following duties are available over the next two months:

Sunday 12th November - Safety Boat Driver
