It’s been a fantastic May and now that June is here the sailing season is non-stop, we also have our main social event of the Summer - the Summer Shindig - coming up!

Preparations for the Summer Shindig, our major social event for the Summer, are well underway, and the event promises to be another great success. If you’ve not already got your tickets, please contact shscsocial@gmail.com or book and pay at the bar. The Shindig which kicks off at 7:00 pm. on Saturday 8th July is sandwiched between the Club Regatta, Junior and Youth Championships which take place on the Saturday from 2:00 p.m. and 11:00 a.m. respectively and the Club Championships which take place on Sunday 9th July from 11:30 a.m. Both the Shindig and the racing events have always been hugely popular so this is definitely a weekend not to be missed.

Also coming up we have the Memorial Cup, where we remember departed friends, this Wednesday and then on Sunday 25th June we’ll be holding the Anniversary Cup from 11:30 a.m. Join in for some great sailing and the opportunity to win fun prizes!

Following on from this we will be hosting the Regional Heats of the 2017 Honda RIB Challenge on Saturday 1st July. Thank you to our amazing PB Instructors who have been providing training on Thursday evenings, well done to all our Juniors who have been taking part and good luck to those who will be representing the Club. Please do come along and cheer on our representatives on 1st July.

Away from events at the club  Mike Jones has been updating members on the 2017 Lord Birkett races at Ullswater Yacht Club on the 1/2 July. This ‘marathon’ event has always been popular with Club Members, if anyone has entered please could they let Mike know at mwj3724@gmail.com

Looking back over the last month a big thank you to everyone who was involved in our Push the Boat Out Event. We welcomed over 100 visitors, 50% of whom went out on the water either via our helmed sailing sessions or in club members’ boats. Two visitors have signed up to join the club, a further two families are keen to go ahead and we have a booking for our adult course and interest in a junior course. The main comment on the day was just how “welcoming” all the members are, so a very big thank you for coming up to the club and showing your support. Also to everyone who made our third Junior Squad weekend another great event for the children - thank you! Fabulous weather, superb on the water skills training, fun activities and a great support team onshore well done Simon, Dee and your team.

Please be aware that security is becoming an issue now that the evenings are getting longer, boat ties are available and the gate needs to be kept shut/ locked.

Read on to find out what’s new up at the club and how you can get the most from your membership.

Sunday morning racing for Juniors/ Family

A new racing innovation for our Juniors this year is the opportunity to race for just one lap of a course. A great introduction for Juniors to racing, these races will also feature their own start, so the start line will be less crowded and the main fleet will already be underway before those Juniors wishing to take advantage of shortened racing start. This will be available from 21st May to 16th July (NOT 25th June or 9th July).  Juniors wanting to take part in this shortened course will need to tie a blue ribbon to their boom so that our Race Officers can ‘finish them’. Blue ribbons will be available at the sign on location by the galley.

So to re-cap:

* The race start will be tagged on to the back of the Summer Morning Handicap race (11.30am - main handicap start, junior/family start 6 minutes later - same course/1 lap)

* There will be only 1 lap

* This is a 7 race series – must sail a minimum of 4 to qualify

* Each competing boat must have a junior (16 or under) helm or crew

* Adult helms may sail with more than one child crew and/or different children in different races but must keep to the same boat for the series

* Helm/crew combinations that may wish to swap positions in different races must keep to the same boat for the series

* The boat’s PY number must be more than 1000 (i.e. no scary fast boats)

* More experienced junior sailors are encouraged to join the main race.

Rookie sailing

Recognising that some people need some help either on or off the water, we will be offering some additional support. Whilst most people are comfortable just approaching fellow members for some help, which they are always happy to give, it’s not always easy to ask. So, one member on a Sunday will be volunteering to wear the OnBoard Instructor shirt and will happily help with rigging, queries etc. On the water, if you are not racing and would like to be given some tips/ on the water coaching please tie a red ribbon - available at the sign on by the galley - to your boom and we will know that you are happy to be offered some support. Please return the ribbons after each sail so that others can use them.

Sailing Series in June/ July

The following series are now well underway:

Wednesday night series

Thursday night cruising

Friday night sailing/ kids club

Saturday series

Sunday morning and afternoon series

Past events at the Club

RYA Push the Boat Out - 100+ visitors joined us on the day, thank you for your support!

Thank you to all our amazing volunteers who came and supported this year’s RYA Push the Boat Out event at the club on 21st May. Thirty-four visitors aged from 5 to 65 took to the water in the club’s training fleet. Smiles and laughs were the order of the day as our novices enjoyed a 30 minute sample session which saw many of them graduating from look-out, to crew to helm! More than 20 family and friends of club members also took the opportunity to get on the water, cruising up and down the reservoir in club members’ dinghies.

The turnaround of the day came from young Evie (5) who was anxious about going out in a dinghy, but by the end of her taster session she was captain of the dinghy, sporting a smile from ear to ear, having crewed and helmed!

More than fifty friends and family of those taking part in sailing came along to support and enjoyed a great welcome at the club - there were so many comments on the day of how friendly and helpful everyone was.

A very big thank you to everyone involved.

Optimist and Topper Open

Well done to everyone who took part in The Topper and Optimist Opens were last weekend and we had 8 Toppers representing the club in a fleet of 25, and 3 Oppies representing the club in a fleet of 13 in total. Congratulations to Kamran Ewbank our highest placed sailor who came in fourth in the Topper Open and to Jacob Felton our highest place Oppie sailor who came fifth in the Oppie Open. A very big thank you to all of our superb race teams and on shore volunteers who put on some great races in what proved to be very challenging conditions. Heavy winds ensured lots of capsizes and a large number of DNC/ DNFs.

Notices

New Staunton Harold Sailing Club - dedicated Windguru Station

We now have our own dedicated Windguru station, set up by the Race Box thanks to our tech team please make a note of the URL - https://www.windguru.cz/station/991

Polite Notice to all those using the Power Boats

Please could duty crews avoid dragging the front wheels into alignment rather than taking time to ‘jockey’ them as their name suggests. This has led to the destruction of one of the ‘outer carcass’ on a wheel.

Please could crews ensure that all designated kit is kept on the Power Boat it belongs to. If kit is removed or missing please ensure that it is replaced and if it can not be, promptly reported. We are finding kit missing, replacing it and then finding it at the bottom of a kit bag on another boat.

Please could anyone using the Power Washer ensure that is put back in its designated storage space and not left blocking access to the cupboard.

And lastly, please ensure that you drain all Power Boats before returning them to the Boat House, and not once inside the Boat House.

Thank you

Security - please close and lock gates and keep your boats tied down

Now that the nights are getting longer, we are experiencing some unwanted launches. We ask all members to be aware of people who shouldn’t be in the boat park - please report them. Please also ensure that all gates are kept locked (except when there are Open Meetings/ Open Days in progress). You might also like to keep your boat tied down, stakes can be bought from Nigel Pepperdine, or for a ‘dog’ stake that you can then padlock your tie-downs at £9.99 go to: Amazon

Women’s Group

Thank you to all our women sailors who took part in the photo shoot for our new Laser 2000s - bought thanks to a Sport England grant under the #thisgirlcan. We could have been in the Med!

We are starting some informal training on Friday evenings for those women who would like to gain more confidence in their sailing or powerboating skills over the next 12 months with a view to joining the instructor team…..Many of you will find yourselves bringing children to the club and spending a lot of time waiting or chatting. Why not get on the water and learn how to get involved a bit more, make some new friends, gain confidence and have fun all at the same time! Email Elaine if you would like to join in whether or not you can sail already! We will be kicking off the first sessions with rigging the 2000s and ‘launching the powerboat’ lessons nothing too scary!  elaine@zestbusinesscoaching.co.uk
