Staunton Harold Sailing Club (SHSC) on the outskirts of Melbourne, welcomed over 100 visitors on Sunday 21st May, as it joined 382 other sailing clubs across the country in the RYA’s “Push the Boat Out” initiative - to give people the opportunity to get out on the water and experience the joy of sailing.

With summer just around the corner, the day was the perfect opportunity for newcomers to the sport, and SHSC family and friends to get afloat for the first time. Thirty-four visitors aged from 5 to 65 took to the water in the club’s training fleet. Smiles and laughs were the order of the day as our novices enjoyed a 30 minute sample session which saw many of them graduating from look-out, to crew to helm! More than 20 family and friends of club members also took the opportunity to get on the water, cruising up and down the reservoir in club members’ dinghies.

The turnaround of the day came from young Evie (5) who was anxious about going out in a dinghy, but by the end of her taster session she was captain of the dinghy, sporting a smile from ear to ear, having crewed and helmed!
Elaine Penhaul, Commodore of SHSC commenting on the day said, “A massive thank you goes to all our volunteers, expert helms, safety and on-shore teams and all our club members for ‘Pushing the Boat Out’ and giving such a warm welcome to all of our visitors!
“Our thanks, also go to everyone who joined us on the day, we hope you enjoyed your sailing experience and we look forward to seeing you again at Staunton Harold Sailing Club.”
