14th May 2020 Coronavirus Update

Dear Friends, you will have seen that the government rules on exercising outdoors have changed from yesterday.  This change includes the ability to  “exercise outdoors as often as you wish – following social distancing guidelines” & “use outdoor sports courts or facilities, such as a tennis or basketball court, or golf course – with members of your household, or one other person while staying 2 metres apart”.  This is great news and means that sailing is permitted, with certain limitations.  We should also remember that we have a number of members who are being shielded and still won’t be able to sail, and we look forward to seeing them again as soon as they are able to visit.

For us, the final thing that needs to happen before we can start sailing again is for Severn-Trent to reopen the site.  We are working closely with them and their plan is to reopen Staunton Harold before the end of May, provided they can support this.  We should know the exact date early next week.  We will also need to satisfy them on the precautions that we have put in place before we can start.

This brings us to the final point – we will have to make changes to the way we operate to ensure that we can keep the 2m separation required.  This will involve changes in the way we use the clubhouse, and asking that safety boats and double-handers are manned by people from the same household.  We will start slowly, probably one day a week and will minimise the risk of accidents by not sailing when it’s too windy.  We will provide more information on this, and the revised sailing programme, as soon as we can.

Although it will be a bit different initially, we hope that we will all be able get back on the water soon and start to enjoy our great sport again.
