Learn to sail at Staunton Harold Sailing Club
At Staunton Harold Sailing Club, adult training courses are designed with the complete beginner in mind and make an ideal introduction to the world of dinghy sailing.
Learn a fun active outdoor skill
We teach Levels 1 & 2 of the RYA National Sailing Scheme in an interesting and enjoyable programme of theoretical and practical instruction. On completion of the course, the successful sailor will be safety conscious, have a basic knowledge of sailing and be capable of sailing without instruction in light winds.
We have options to learn in either double or single handed boats. Some participants prefer to go ‘solo’ as early as possible and so choose the single handed option. Others prefer a more leisurely introduction to sailing and so choose the double-handed option where there is another student plus instructor in the boat in the early days of the course (you don’t need to provide the additional student – we mix and match during the course). Moving between the two boats post-course is relatively straightforward, so don’t worry if your preferred option is fully booked. And we will help you with that transition if needed.
The Detail:
“What will I be doing and what do I need to bring?”
Our double-handed sailing courses are taught in RS Visions – large double-handed dinghies ideally suited for training. Towards the end of every course, we try to incorporate a ‘try a boat’ session during which you may be introduced to other classes of dinghy, including the Laser Pico and Topper.
Our single-handed sailing courses are taught primarily in Laser Picos – small, single-handed dinghies popular with beginners.
Buoyancy aids, wetsuits and spray tops are provided. Sensible ‘old’ clothes, including closed-toe footwear, should be worn while sailing, bearing in mind the possibility of getting wet. A change of clothing and a towel is essential!
Successful completion of the Level 2 certificate also allows club members to hire club boats. We have a high number of boats across a number of classes and are able to offer an ‘annual hire’ option at an attractive rate to members. Therefore there is no need to rush out and buy a boat to continue sailing post-course.
We also offer adult improver training sessions to continue your progression plus opportunities with our fleet captains.
