Two top 20 finishes for Staunton sailor in BYS ER Junior Champs
Congratulations to Jacob Felton (Laser 4.7), representing Staunton Harold Sailing Club in the British Youth Sailing (BYS) Junior Champs. The BYS Eastern Region (ER) Champs previously known as Zone Champs were hosted by Grafham Sailing Club over the 29/ 30th September. The RYA have rebadged the previous Zone Champs to fulfil achieve their goal – to make the event a major part of the junior sailing calendar rather than just a qualifier for sailors applying for zones. For most fleets this is a regional champs but for the 4.7s, as previously, it is part of the national ladder series. Sixty-eight boats took part, so a great turn out. It was a shame the water level didn’t follow suit! Unfortunately Staunton isn’t the only club to be suffering from low water levels ….
Blue sky greeted the sailors on Saturday morning, but there was little breeze as the sailors rigged. Thankfully the wind came up by the time they launched – still light, but increasing sufficiently. Sunday was again light, but windy enough to make the racing fun!
Jacob had a mixed racing on both days, having a good race, a bad race and an OK race! He finished in 37th, with 17th and 13th being his notable achievements for the weekend. This follows on from a 28th overall, earlier in the month, at the secondary indicator in Pwllheli.
