Lord Birkett Memorial Trophy – well done to our travelling sailors!

Success for Staunton sailors at Lord Birkett

This weekend, ten Staunton boats, travelled to the Lake District, for the two day Lord Birkett Memorial Trophy. And what a weekend they had! Congratulations to everyone who took part in what was a spectacular 190 + boat race.

Staunton took three, top ten places, two, 1st in fleets , two fleet 2nd’s, four further top 10 fleet spots, and a 17th and 23rd – wow!

Well done to Grahame Newton and Mark Stevens (Fireball) who came 4th overall, and first in the Fireball fleet. Also to Nigel and Di Pepperdine (RS200), who came 5th overall, and first in the RS200 fleet. To Daren Fasey and Colin Davis (Fireball), who came eighth overall, and 2nd in the Fireball fleet, (Daren and Colin came 16th overall and first in the Fireball fleet in 2017).

Also, Lol Hayward and Lynne Munro (RS200), who came 56th overall, and 7th in the RS200 fleet. To Richard Pepperdine and Amy Forbes (RS200), who came 63rd overall, and 8th in the RS200 fleet. To, Nathan Smith and Richard Barnett (2000), who came 95th overall, and 2nd in the 2000 fleet. To Terry Forbes and Aileen Barnett (2000) who came 11th overall, and 3rd in the 2000 fleet. To, Russ Coggrave and Lucy Mallory (RS200), who came 114th overall, and 10th in the RS200 fleet. To, Nick Kindon and Paul Munro (RS400), who came 115th, overall and 17th, in the RS400 fleet. And to Henry Barnes and Grahame Smith (RS400), who came 135th overall, and 23rd in the RS400 fleet.

Lord Birkett Memorial Trophy

The Lord Birkett Memorial Trophy is an annual event, held over two day’s – this year on the 7th and 8th July. The race see’s sailors race down Ullswater lake, a distance of about seven miles. They continue past Kailpot Crag and the plaque to the memory of Lord Birkett, round an island at the southern end, and back up the lake to Ullswater Yacht Club. Sailors then repeat the race on the Sunday. The race was established in 1963, in memory of Lord Norman Birkett, who successfully defended the right of public access to Ullswater.

Lord Birkett Memorial Trophy 2018Racing started at 1:00 p.m.on Saturday, July 7, and then at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, July 8. The race was open to all monohulls with a recognised handicap rating below 1340.

A big thank you to everyone at Ullswater Yacht Club (which is celebrating its 60th Anniversary/ Diamond Jubilee this year) for a fantastic event.
