Powerboat Training
At SHSC we offer powerboat training for adults as well as powerboat refreshers and safety boat training courses

RYA National Powerboat Certificate (Level 1/2)
This course is designed to teach you the basic skills and background knowledge to become a competent powerboat driver [Members only]. No previous experience is needed. You’ll be taught in mainly planing craft.
The course content includes launching and recovery, boat handling at low and high speed and seamanship skills such as man overboard. Certificates at Level 1 or 2 are awarded at the end of the course at the discretion of the Chief Instructor.
The level 2 certificate is the minimum club requirement to enable members to drive club boats whilst on rescue duty. This certificate also forms the basis of the test for the International Certificate of Competence required by drivers of powerboats in many other countries.
The age requirement for this course currently is a minimum of 16 years of age.
The course cost for members is £80 for 2023 which is heavily discounted when compared to commercial centres to encourage our members to gain this important qualification. This includes all training material plus online registration of the certificate.
If you have driven a powerboat but have no PB2 qualification we offer a Direct Assessment half day in which you demonstrate your skills to an instructor and may be awarded the qualification.

RYA Safety Boat Certificate
This 2 day course aims to introduce the techniques used in powerboats escorting racing fleets of dinghies and windsurfers, providing safety and rescue cover for training fleets and assisting in race management. You must already hold the level 2 National PB Certificate and have subsequent driving experience in order to participate on this course. It is also strongly recommended that safety boat drivers hold a current first aid certificate.
If you would like to be added to the waiting list for the next course please email Paul Munro who will be in touch once we have dates agreed.
Powerboat Refresher Training
Powerboat refresher sessions are aimed at members with a PB2 qualification or who are experienced power-boaters.
Expect to get a reminder of your ‘pre-flight’ checks, what to look out for before you even leave the shore, how to best supervise a race event etc,. as well as some (for most of us) much needed time on the water under an expert eye.
If you’re not PB2 qualified this is a great option to have your ‘level assessed’. This could result in a PB2 certificate which help toward the club’s aim for all PB drivers offering safety cover to be PB2 qualified.
These sessions are FREE TO MEMBERS again in 2023 although might we suggest a small donation to the club’s charity?
If you would like to be added to the waiting list for the next session please email Paul Munro who will be in touch once we have dates arranged.
