14 visitors joined 15 home club sailors for the 2023 Staunton Harold UKLA – ILCA UK Open Meeting.
PRO Tim Gray wisely postponed race 1 until sufficient wind filled in for a decent race, which meant that only 3 of the planned 4 races could be completed.
George Colquitt (West Kirby) and John Ling (Bartley) gradually pulled away from the fleet to finish 1st and 2nd in race 1. Local sailor Pete Gray in a borrowed (45 year old) boat narrowly lost out on 3rd place when he was overtaken within sight of the finish line by Nathan Smith also from the home club. Henry Redmond (Covenham) was the first ILCA 6 in 6th place.
Race 2 & 3
The wind continued to build during lunch and race 2 got underway in the best wind of the day, however, it gradually dropped, and the race was shortened to one lap to the relief of Paul Williamson (Staunton Harold) who had led for the whole race but was being caught by George Colquitt and John Ling and finished in this order. Craig Williamson (Staunton Harold) came from behind to pass Nathan Smith on the finish line to finish in 4th place.
With the wind gone completely many of the fleet headed ashore, but just after the last boat had finished the wind returned for a final race in the most consistent wind of the day. George Colquitt, John Ling and Paul Williamson pulled out a small lead on the rest of the fleet, however the lead changed several times with all of the taking a turn.
However, George won with John 2nd and Paul 3rd reflecting the overall finishing positions. Pete Gray finished 4th with Matt Lathoud 5th in the final race. Henry Redmond was first ILCA 6 overall, Alenka Hrovat (Bartley) 1st ILCA 4, Christine Statham (Attenborough) 1st Lady and Elsa Minton (Chase) 1st Youth.
