A very big thank you to Nigel Pepperdine for Sunday's Rule 18, Big Sunday Debate for Sailors! Thank you for the scenarios, and clear explanations (and of course for the snacks too!!). This was a super debate, held in a packed bar, after the sailing which gave us all a great opportunity to refresh our knowledge and mull over real racing examples so we can get out there and enjoy our sailing at Staunton Harold even more.

Key takeaways from Sunday's event were:-

Dont get too overwhelmed by the rules of sailing….you probably know a high percentage but will not always know the number of each rule.

You know part 2 Section A:-

Rules 10, 11, 12, and 13. (Port/Starboard, windward leeward, clear astern keep clear and keeping clear when tacking).

You will be quite aware of Section B:-

Rules 14, 15, and 16 (Avoiding contact, acquiring right of way, changing course). Basically, think before you do a manoeuvre and dont cause a problem for a boat who maybe impacted by your actions.

These rules are basically limitations for part A rules.

Remember 17 from the end of the chat….

Something you dont want to get involved, luffing and the implications. This rule should only be exercised to your advantage at the very end of a pursuit race…the last 30 seconds.

Section C, covers Rule 18, Mark Room:-

Again we all probably know the bulk of this rule. Remember the 3 boat zone, giving water to boats with an overlap and the pitfalls of approaching a windward mark on port tack. It can be a risky business but dont be frightened.
Port and starboard still applies at a windward mark but not at leeward mark in the 3 boat length zone.

Rules 19, 20 and Section D:-

Rules 19 and 20 which we didnt discuss on Sunday involve room at an obstruction, capsized boats and approaching the bank.

Section D again not covered, on Sunday, covers a couple of topics such as sailing backward and penalty (turns) Again I would think most sailors are aware of these points and a quick google search would easily clarify.

This is largely what you need to know. There are 70 plus rules in sailing but these are items which will impact you most at Staunton Harold.

Finally, remember, if in doubt ask a mate!
