Junior Training
Get kids involved in Sailing
Sailing is a healthy, outdoor sport that is great fun and helps build confidence, self-reliance and friendships. Having learnt a fantastic new skill, children can participate in regular junior club activities and often go on to enjoying sailing competitively or just for fun.

As an RYA Approved Training Centre, we teach Stages 1 and 2 of the Youth Sailing Scheme in a friendly and supportive environment, with practical and theory elements delivered by our team of experienced instructors. The course takes place over 4 days across 3 weekends and is suitable for 8 to 16 year olds with little or no previous sailing experience. It is open to both club members and non-members.
Each course typically has 6 to 12 juniors who are taught in our club Optimist and Topper single-handed dinghies that have proved popular with junior sailors over many years.
We provide buoyancy aids, wetsuits and spray tops to keep everyone safe and warm.
Bearing in mind they are likely to get wet, you will need to bring sensible 'old' clothes, including a pair of trainers (or beach shoes if they have them). A change of clothing and a towel is essential!
The courses are great fun and, having learnt the basics, they can join the clubs Junior/Youth activities to continue to improve their skills and make friends with other junior sailors. Junior sailors are also encouraged to join club racing where they can compete with both children and adults on a level playing field.
We have a large number of club boats that are available for both daily and annual hire for suitably qualified sailors. Our hire policy requires juniors to have Stage 2 qualification to hire Optibats and Toppers and a Stage 3 qualification to hire the more advanced RS Teras or RS Fevas. Stage 3 qualifications can be achieved during our Junior Squad sessions.
Note: Junior courses are aimed at teaching 8 to 16 year olds to sail. Those aged 16 and over are welcome to join the adult courses.
- The course fee is £170 plus 4 months club membership at £4.20 per month. If the parent/guardian is not a club member then one must also become Supporter which costs £10 per year. Total cost: £196.80
- The membership fee entitles the junior to be a full member of the club during the course and for 4 months to consolidate their skills including the FREE Junior Rookie club that follows directly on from the course.
- Your monthly membership payments will continue after that time unless you tell us that you want to leave the club.
