Sailing with Spinnakers

Advanced Dinghy Course

Discover the thrill of sailing with a spinnaker on this exciting 2-day RYA Advanced Module. Learn how to rig, hoist, gybe, and recover asymmetric spinnakers while sailing the fastest and most efficient course downwind.

Please note that this course is run for Members only.

COURSE DATES: Saturday 13th & Sunday 14th June 2026

Over two days, youll gain the confidence and skills to handle spinnakers, transforming your downwind sailing into a fast, fun, and tactical experience. With expert coaching, youll cover everything from preparation and rigging to advanced boat handling techniques, ensuring you leave the course ready to fly the kite in style.

This advanced module is the perfect step for sailors looking to broaden their skills, whether for club racing, recreational sailing, or simply to enjoy the added excitement and challenge of spinnaker sailing.

Course participants must have successfully completed the RYA Level 2 certificate (or equivalent experience). This ensures that you have the core boat handling skills needed to progress safely and confidently with spinnaker sailing. Some previous experience of spinnaker sailing (maybe as crew) would be an advantage but is not a pre-requisite for the course.

The course will be taught using the club's Laser 2000 or Feva dinghies. If you wish to learn in your own spinnaker dinghy then this may be possible - please contact principal@shsc.org.uk to discuss this.

Those successfully completing the course will be issued with a certificate and the RYA Advanced Sailing Book.

The course cost is £80 which is heavily discounted when compared to commercial centres which often charge in excess of £250 for this advanced sailing course.

Reserve a place on the course using the link below and we will follow up with confirmation and how to pay for the course fee via the membership portal.
