Laser Club Championship Tricky and Testy Day on the water!

Published 21:10 on 23 Sep 2025
With the ILCA Open on 21st September cancelled, the club ran a dedicated Laser Club Championship instead — and what a great turnout we had, with 14 boats on the start line!
Challenging Conditions
Low water levels and a light northerly breeze made life difficult for our OOD, who did an excellent job setting usable courses despite the conditions. Sailors also had to work hard to find enough water for clean mark roundings — but that didn't stop the racing from being close and competitive, with final results coming down to tie-breaks.
Morning Races
Two back-to-back races kicked things off, with Grahame Newton and Nathan Smith each taking a win. The middle of the fleet was a lively place, with places changing constantly and plenty of close-quarters action.
A Well-Earned Lunch Break
After a tough morning on the water, everyone was more than ready for a warming bowl of homemade soup — not to mention possibly the largest cake selection ever seen at the club! A huge thank you to Lydia and Georgina in the galley for keeping everyone so well fed.
Afternoon Action
Two more races followed in the afternoon, with the final one seeing the strongest breeze of the day. Despite the challenging conditions, the fleet kept things tight until the very end.
Results
1st - Grahame Newton (two wins and a second)
2nd - Nathan Smith (also two wins and a second)
3rd - Terry Forbes

Thank You!
A big thank you to our race team for making the racing happen in difficult circumstances — and congratulations to everyone who took part. It was a great day of sailing, food, and fun, despite the tricky conditions!
